On Guard

Image of Hare in On Guard

Brown hares are most abundant in arable or open grassland close to hedgerows or woodland. Mainly nocturnal, they feed on bark, grain and other vegetation and can be a pest to farmers and foresters. During the day, hares retreat to depressions in the grass or soil where they sleep or use their superb sight and hearing to detect danger. Hares are solitary, apart from rearing the young leverets and courtship, which involves spectacular leaping, chasing and boxing.
